For those of you who may not be aware, a long-time friend, colleague and FMCSA employee has moved on to different pastures to bring his skills to another Agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation. Joe Delorenzo, FMCSA’s Acting Associate Administrator for Enforcement and Compliance, has been promoted to Associate Administrator for Safety and Oversight at the Federal Transit Administration.
Joe, a longtime friend of STC, has had a long and storied career with FMCSA, which started in the field and ended with him serving as FMCSA’s Acting Associate Administrator for Enforcement where he had critical influence over how FMCSA has conducted its compliance and enforcement responsibilities. Joe was the face of FMCSA’s enforcement program, often seen explaining new programs and initiatives at various industry events and listening session. While industry did not always agree with Joe, he was always willing to listen and consider input, and equally as important, to answer difficult questions.
Over his career at FMCSA Joe helped lead the Hazmat and Cargo Tank Programs, and for a time was responsible for running the National Training Center. He was also heavily involved in Post 9/11 FMCSA security-related activities and interactions with other agencies and industry, as well as more recently with responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the policy front, many will know him as the “ELD Guy” for FMCSA, but he has also been very actively involved in various major agency initiatives such as Hours of Service, Compliance, Safety, Accountability, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, Uniform Fine Assessment development, Entry Level Driver Training, Intermodal Equipment Provider/Roadability regulations, and many other significant agency compliance and enforcement initiatives. Joe has been a strong and principled leader on regulatory compliance and enforcement. STC has appreciated the opportunity to work with Joe on a range of issues over his many years while at FMCSA and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors at FTA.
