In 2022, traffic congestion costs the trucking industry the equivalent of 435,686 drivers remaining idle for an entire year. That’s a 5.4% improvement over 2021 congestion data. This is according the latest numbers from ATRI.
While trending downward, fatalities among truck drivers are still high, according to the 2023 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries report from BLS, which put the number of fatalities among heavy tractor-trailer drivers at 823, down 12 percent compared with 2022.
Truck volumes are expected to grow 1.6% in 2024 according to the American Trucking Associations. Market share among modes is expected to continue favor trucking over the next 10 years. In 2024, 72.7% of freight tonnage in the US was handled by truck.
